Free and effective guide to get rid of Stains in 2013

With the weather change we will have more chances of getting family cloth stained.

What is stain?

Stain is a discoloration that can be clearly distinguished from the surface, material, or medium it is found upon. They are caused by the chemical or physical interaction of two dissimilar materials.

Types of stains

There can be intentional stains (such as wood stains or paint), indicative stains (such as food coloring or adding a substance to make bacteria visible under a microscope) natural stains (such as rust on iron or a patina on bronze) and accidental stains (like spilling ketchup on your shirt).

Different types of material can be stained by different substances, and stain resistance is an important characteristic in modern textile engineering.

Every day we all get some kind of stains in our cloths. Sometime they are very hard to remove. I have tried most of these ideas and find very effective. To treat stains please follow some basic rules first

·         Check the Care Label on clothing before attempting to remove stain
·         Treat all stains as soon as possible. Avoid drying; it can cause stain to set into fibres of fabric.
·         Scrape off any excess material from the fabric using a dull edged knife
·         Use a cloth or paper towel to soak up any liquid
·         Rubbing can cause the stain to penetrate the fabric deeper

Here are some common culprits of stains

  1. Alcoholic Beverages/ Wine stains

Soak in cold water. Blot with club soda and a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Apply detergent paste to stain while still wet. Wash using bleach safe for fabric.

  1. Baby Formula stains

For fresh stains on white fabric, moisten cloth with water, dip in baking soda and blot stained area. If persists, rub detergent paste into stain or use pretreatment product. Rinse thoroughly, and wash using bleach safe for fabric (and baby) in hottest water safe for fabric.

  1. Blood stains

Soak in cold water and scrape off excess using dull edged knife. Apply pre-treatment product. Soak in warm to cool water for at least 30 minutes. More time may be necessary. Wash in warm to cool water. Avoid any use of heat as it can make stain set. Wash again if necessary.

  1. Butter stains

Saturate stain with pre-treatment product and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Apply detergent paste or heavy-duty liquid detergent. Wash. If persists use bleach safe for that fabric. For heavy stains place stain face down on paper towels and apply dry cleaning fluid. Change paper towels frequently. Let air dry, rinse thoroughly, and wash in hottest water safe for that fabric.

  1. Chalk stains

Shake off excess chalks or removes using sticky tape. Apply pre-treatment product. Wash using bleach safe for that fabric. Wash in hottest water safe for fabric. If stain persists, apply a bleach paste and wash again. Rinse in 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Rinse again and re-wash.

  1. Chocolate stains

Soak in cold water. Use pre-treatment product and apply paste of detergent. Wash in hottest water safe for that fabric. Rinse thoroughly. If stain persists, re-wash using bleach safe for that fabric.

  1. Coffee and Tea stains

Saturate stain with pre-treatment product. Rinse cloth. Apply detergent paste and wash in hottest water safe for that fabric. Avoid using soap as this can set stain into fabric. If persists then use a bleach safe for that fabric.

  1. Correction Fluid (White-Out) stains

Take to dry cleaners and have them process as if it was paint.
